I can’t give a definitive answer but oil tanks always had a “dip” stick for the checking the oil level. The only one I’ve had any experience with is the MK&T engine at the Museum of Transportation in St. Louis. It was marked with gallons. There would also be a vent pipe to relieve any pressure build up in the tank as the oil had to be heated to get it to flow. I believe the light was for safety reasons. Walking on the tank top at night with spilled oil on it could be an adventure.
