I thought I’d add to Steve’s prior narrative on this subject. There were 40 telegraph poles to a mile. The mile was marked by the aluminum numbers; at the tenth pole in the mile the pole was marked with one metal band, the the twenty pole two metal bands and at the thirty pole three bands. This system identified track work being done or slow orders in effect for trains operating through a section of track.
