The MDC plastic is rather soft so I just use a flat Exacto blade, flat file to remove as much of the plastic hand holds as I can. Then dress up the area with 400 Emery paper. It actually goes pretty fast due to the soft plastic. I then use a pin Vice with a sewing needle to mark where to drill the #78 holes.
As to the brake details underneath – nope. No one sees the underframe so it’s pretty much as it came out of box.
The large reinforcement plates under the doors were removed as you mentioned. These show up on the WP boxcars but the MP cars just had a piece of steel added in that area.
