The hump yard at Dupo was built by the St. Louis, Iron Mountain & Southern which merged with the Mopac Railway in 1917 to become the Missouri Pacific RR. They (Iron Mountain) bought the only mallet (numbered 4000) on the railroad to be used as a hump engine there. The M-I tracks only ran from Kellogg (where the car ferry incline was) to Salem in Illinois.
