I thought it’s about time for a ballast thread in the new forum!
Without a dedicated right of way section, I’ll post here in General.

I’m looking for the type of ballast used by the SAU&G/Gulf Coast Lines in South Texas around Corpus Christi at the end of the steam era.

It’s difficult to discern from the limited photographs to which I have access, and any information will be greatly appreciated.

    Cheers

The December 31, 1942 Condensed Profile for the GCL around Corpus Christi just shows “rock”. There’s one short area that shows “shell”. Rail was 75 and 80 pound. About half of the line had no tie plates and some of the road was partially plated. No mention of colors but when I was in Louisiana and saw shells being used on some industry spurs it was white.

    Thanks Charlie.
Are the condensed profiles to which you refer available through MPHS or are they part of your own collection? I’d love to get a copy of the Corpus end of the SAU&G line.

These are in my collection, just contact me offlist with your address and I’ll see how many pages I need to have copied we can then work out the cost and postage.
