Am going to conduct interviews here in Nebraska of former Mopac employees. Joel Boucher, Steve McVeys father and Bob Ferguson in Fall City. Maybe more as many former MP guys retired here.
Tried to locate a camera but no luck. My son in law has a wedding video business in Lawrence, Kansas and has won numerous awards the last six years from one of the top wedding magazines ‘The Knott’. He’s flown to Hawaii to video weddings so he’s quite the SME. Here’s his web site http://www.baysingerfilms.com/#videos
Anyway he’s given me a suggestion on a good Cannon video camera, microphone and extra battery pack. Talked to Kevin and we are going to purchase one for the MPHS so we can do these and future interviews.
Thinking we can also video record Mopac equipment, model railroads and depots.
Matt, my son in law alway recommended a video software that’s around $40 so we can insert photos during the interview and edit dead time and add titles and captions.
To me this gets to what a true railroad historical society should be focused on, the former employee memories. We can sell models and books, build web sites, display photos but the balance is getting the former employees’ perspective of working for a railroad and its unique personality from the 1950s and 1960s.

I’ve used my Panasonic video camera for them, although I actually now think the video on my SLR is better than my video camera. I just have only used it for short clips filming the kids, never tried to run it for an hour, so I don’t really know about the batteries on it. I can pug in the video camera which is nice.
I’ve also run into you never know where you will be filming, so I am now hauling a whole case of extras with me – extension cords, three prong adaptor for two prong electric, lighting, extra light bulbs. I’m adding something after every interview. As for software, yes that is a good idea – a better idea is to find someone who knows how to do it. Video editing is tricky & time consuming. I find it tedious and annoying and hate doing it.
We need a plan on how we are going to do these. Do you want me to set up an MPHS Youtube account so we can upload the videos?
Also, I think the videos need to be edited down to about 10-15 mins each – no one wants to sit through an hour interview. Many of the questions asked you get a yes or no answer with no supporting story, and could be cut down. Also cut out all the don’t remember answers. AN edited version will be easier to watch and more enjoyable.
