Bumping the Bagnell Branch up to 1979-80 had me looking through several Mopac color reference books for some ideas on adding a few 40′ cars to the mix. While it’s easy to get hooked in buying those colorful yellow RBOX and bright blue RI boxcars there were still a number of 40′ boxcars still on the railroad’s rosters.
The prototype I’ve picked is on page 44 of the Mopac Color Guide by Jim Kinkaid. It has the ‘Route of the Eagles’ on the sides but is still in revenue service in October 24, 1979. The only changes I plan to make from the photo is leaving the roof walk off and replace the Youngstown doors with Superior doors.

While these cars initially received black roofs when they were built in the 1950’s by the late 70’s all the paint had worn off the galvanized steel roof so all you had was the bare steel. I sprayed the roof with Tamiya primer gray to replicate the bare steel and brush painted a couple of panels a lighter gray for variety. I’ll later come back and paint the ribs a red brown rust color with some oil paints. The white areas in the doors is Gorilla Glue where I glued down some metal weights.

Yes, it’s a model the MPHS brought out with four other 40′ Mopac models 15 years ago as a fund raised headed up by Ed Hawkins. Atlas now handles Branchline and has a nice factory painted Route of the Eagles 8′ door model you can also use.

Material needed..
– Evergreen .015 sheet plastic for the door
– Evergreen HO 1″ X 3″ for the vertical side frame, 2″ X 3″ for the horizontal stiffeners, 2″ X 2″ for the top and sides outside framing. Locations shown on the drawing.Make sure you make the 10″ template from cardboard or metal and not plastic.

September 29, 2015 at 9:20 pm #7290peggyrothschildParticipantHere’s the prototype and the Branchline model after I went over the lettering with Dullcote with a few drops of roof brown mixed in. I’ll let the Dullcote sit of a day and then weather the car using oils and dry pigments. Once I feel it’s close enough to the prototype shot I’ll add the 130000 series number and capacity, load limit and light weight information so those decals stand out.

[attachment=2:2su9ym4f]image.jpeg[/attachment:2su9ym4f]
I then added brown pigment to the oils to darken some of the rust patterns using a stiff brush. Try and follow the metal forms on the roof. If you don’t like what you did the oils can be easily removed using turpentoid and a soft rag or Qtips dipped in turpentoid and you can start over.

TAMIYA – Fine Surface Primer Light Light Gray 180 ml Spray Paint. While the galvanized steel roof on many factory painted models is painted aluminum I was reading several weathering blogs and the ones I thought those that used light gray paint looked the most realistic.

I agree – light gray looks more flat as a weathered steel roof.
October 2, 2015 at 9:18 pm #7306peggyrothschildParticipantHere’s the almost completed boxcar with its six digit number. I added a lighter color paint patch were the old five digit number was and made it 4′ 6″ wide to fit the new number. The COTS block was added, the U-1 yellow dot and the ACI label. With the six digit number and the COTS and U-1 decals added this brings the car up to the late 1970s. The nine inch numbers were from the Microscale decal sheet covering the MP and M-I cushion cars. I still need to weather the wheels and trucks but I generally do that step when I have a number of cars to do.
That’s it for now. I’ll be in Houston next week at the MPHS annual meet, hope to see you there.
