McKean made a model that is pretty close to the C&EI 252850-253199 boxcars built in 1973. I picked up the model off Ebay for $7 and stripped off the factory paint using Scalecoat ‘Unpaint’. The Ebay listing was titled “McKean Master Series HO 50′ ACF OB Box Car Kit” if you want to locate one.

The model has a 10′ door and the prototype was 10′ 6″ so I did some minor surgery and filed out 3″ on each side of the doorway. I also glued a piece of .040″ Evergreen plain styrene to attached the new plug door to. The kit’s provided door isn’t close to the C&EI car so using some photos and a Tangent boxcar with a similiar plug door I’ll scratch-built a couple replacements. As you can see I use a liberal amount of Gorilla Glue to attached the weights. I hate having the weights come loose after the model is finished and closed up.

The roof in the kit is also wrong, as it should have an over hang but I’ll see how the doors come out before tossing any additional money into this project. The numerous holes on the floor are for the future speaker as I plan to install a SoundCar decoder. Decals are a Hearld King B-710 set for C&EI boxcars with the 5′ buzz saw.

Hopefully you’ll see some new doors in my next update….

After the interior .040 plastic sheet dried; I added another .040 sheet in the doorway to start making up the plug door. Using the Exactrail plug door as a guide I’ll dig out some Evergreen styrene that comes close to the dimensions. Filing for me is difficult to get get exact so Tamiya putty is always close at hand. Also the lower door guide on the model is wrong for the C&EI/MP car and I carved it off and will add a lower one later.

Comparing the PC door to the C&EI version the steel horizontal reinforcement pieces aren’t exactly in the same locations. I’ll use the above photo as reference in gluing the 2″x 3″s in place. The HO model at least provides a means to compare Evergreen shapes to the shapes on the door.

    Charlie,

Looking forward to another ‘modern’ addition to your RR. Some of the McKean stuff was very nice…many of the 40′ box cars I have include many extra parts. (doors, ladders, etc.)

I do not have one of the cars you are working on…so, I’m really looking forward to see what you wind up with!
