Hey Guys,

Just did an inventory on my HO Scale Boxcars. I have pictures of 50 ft. and 60 MP boxcars with 10 plug door on them.
What was the purpose of the plug door? Just wondering if they would have been used for food service, obviously this would help keep insects out.
I modeled 3 of the old Mckeen 50 ft. boxcar with the dreadnaught ends and lettered for C&EI. Also did an old Con-Cor 60 ft. boxcar lettered for C&EI. I was able to photograph these cars in the Monroe Yard but this was around 1988, long after the UP take over so their assignments could have changed.

In addition to having a tighter seal, a plug door provides a flush surface on the interior when closed. This can be advantageous for quite a few different commodities. The two that come quickly to mind for me are food stuffs and lumber products such as plywood.
