Does anyone know if the roofs on T&P’s muley cabooses were painted the same color as the caboose bodies, or were the roofs on some or all of them painted black? I get the hint that some or all were black from the few published color photos of them, but none of the photos show more than the edge of the roof so can’t be sure.

Photos of models of MP muley cabooses for sale in the Company Store show one painted with a red roof and the other with a black roof.

I willing to bet due to when the muley cabooses were built the roofing material used was called ‘mulehide’ an industrial canvas material over the wood roof. Am pretty sure the waterproofing on the roof would have been black or weathered to a dark gray. As a side note, MP applied black car cement in the 1940-1950s to steel roofs and I think the T&P did the same so it’s not out of the question that steel roof cabooses could also be black.

As you pointed out it’s very difficult to tell from photos where the photographer is on the ground.
