I have been slacking since the start of 2018 in posting a Photo of the Week, so let us start it back up with one from my personal collection.
MP 12119 resting at Fort Leonard Wood in Missouri on May 2, 1992. A T&P steel caboose built by the T&P in May 1952 and rebuilt in 1967. It originally wore number 2556, then later 13119.
The details on this caboose are interesting. The ACI label is still there, the U-1 wheel dot has been painted over, one window plated over, and the consolidated stencil is a spray paint stencil version over the old one. I am curious what the “969” in the lower center may have designated. Anyone know?
Fort Leonard Wood was at the end of a branch off the BN ex-Frisco Cuba Subdivision just west of Newburg, MO. At this time I was in college nearby at Rolla, and occasionally I found time to venture over to the fort. The branch was sold to the US Army during the Frisco era. In the 1990’s the Army had two Geeps and two SW switchers on site, plus surprisingly an MP caboose.
I believe this caboose is currently located in New Mexico. The owner has indicated it is for sale, but he wants more money than I am willing to pay. It is loaded on a trailer and appears to be in fair shape considering its age, etc. He states that his father bought it from the Army and he shipped it by truck from Ft. Leonard Wood to New Mexico.
