Now that the Missouri-Illinois book is finished I have time to finish a few resin kits that were in the works. The 45’ and 50’ flatcars are resin kits from Chad Boas. Ed Hawkins and I worked on the decal set and Hubert Mask made them up. These are in the company store. I didn’t add the brake staff yet as I knew it would get knocked off during painting and decaling.

The two 45’ gondolas are from F&C and are one piece bodies. These to are decaled with a new decal set from Hubert based on prototype photos.

How did you weather the flatcar boards?

I thought you weren’t modeling this period any more.

Looks like intermountain is thinking about MP FT units again. Any scoop on that?

The individual boards were painted with washes of various grays, browns, etc. Then picked out a few with colored pencil. I haven’t completely given up on the 1950’s.

Intermountain didn’t get enough reservations to do the FTs last time so they dropped the project. I hadn’t heard of any efforts to resurrect these.

I did a few grey wood flatcar decks with just the colored art pencils. They look a lot better than before (and needed no brush cleanup) but don’t have the depth the washes give.

The art pencil weathering is a great tip I learned from you several years ago.

They are listed as “needing reservations.”

I think someone at intermountain told me they need 90 reservations to break even producing a given boxcar scheme. I don’t know if it’s the same for locomotives, but really, I can’t imagine interest worldwide in 90 MP FT unit sets, as much as I want them.

They did run the original grey and yellow Cotton Belt scheme years ago. Beautiful. Apparently a bad decision for intermountain. They were the last ones in remaining stock. I got an ABBA set for near half price. Got em to run on a now gone club that closed down before I ever had a chance to run them. They are still unopened.
