I’d picked up this piece 20+ years ago from another railroad employee and it was missing the hinged lid. I found a complete bowl on eBay and captured the images for future reference. Looking at the photos I determined the thickness was close to .040” and found some Evergreen plastic tube that was the same size as the hinge on the bowl. I cut the lid out, glued on the rod and found a piece of brass rod that fit the opening. Next I needed to make up the round handle. I have a 54 ounce Eagle coffee pot and used a set of calipers to determine the size of the ball and the base it sat on. An eBay seller had the proper size wood ball. Using Evergreen plastic I cut out the sizes and glued to the lid. After all was dry, I filled in the gaps with Tamiya putty and covered the ball in a light coat of potty to seal the wood. After the putty dried I filed and sanded the pieces until all were smooth and matched the lid on the coffee pot.
Once I was satisfied with the shape I sprayed both sides with sandable primer and let it dry overnight. The following day I sprayed it with Tamiya silver but decided it’s too flat of a finish. I’ve ordered a ‘chrome’ paint that hopefully better matches the original silver piece when it’s polished.
While it’s certainly not a perfect replacement I’ll never find the missing lid. The hinge on the left side of the bowl had part of it missing but I didn’t want to modify the original bowl, the new top looks better than the bowl did when it was missing the lid.
My next restoration is a little more involved. I have a GCL coffee pot that’s missing the handle. I found photos recently of a complete pot on the web so I now know what kind of shape the handle is I just need to determine if I’ll make the replacement out of wood or use plastic again.
