In later years, trains 336-336 on the Chester sub were motor car trains. The RPO service therein was designated as the St. Louis & Murphysboro RPO, and the RPO made its last run on March 19, 1950. The motorcar train itself operated from St. Louis to Chester and Gorham, and then from Gorham to Murphysboro (where it crossed the GM&O) and on to Marion. Recent Facebook comments indicate that this train operated in its last weeks as a mail and express train only, no passenger accommodation. The attached photo possibly shows that operation at St. Louis, with a RPO-baggage motorcar and no coach. Its also possible that the coach was dropped at Union Station and the motor car was then moved to MP facilities for servicing. Can anyone provide better details on this service, and if it did operate without passenger accommodations for a period, what were the circumstances?
Thanks,
Bill Pollard
