These are old mile pole markers that were mounted on the telegraph poles. They are made of a very thin metal with raised numbers. These were later replaced with smaller markers that were made of aluminum. They had reflective numbers on them. The new mile markers were mounted on fence poles which were placed along the right of way, but much closer to the tracks than the telegraph poles were. The two markers pictured here are mile 496 which is on the White River Sub Division between Aurora, Missouri and Hoberg, Missouri.

I thought I’d add to Steve’s prior narrative on this subject. There were 40 telegraph poles to a mile. The mile was marked by the aluminum numbers; at the tenth pole in the mile the pole was marked with one metal band, the the twenty pole two metal bands and at the thirty pole three bands. This system identified track work being done or slow orders in effect for trains operating through a section of track.
