Missouri Pacific bell bottom I cleaned yesterday using the lye method. I didn’t take ‘before’ images but the lantern was quite dirty and crusty. The lantern sat in the lye solution for four days and then soaked in water and white vinegar to neutralize the lye. SOS pad was used to remove the remaining layer of dirt and finally WD40 and 0000 steel wool was the last step. Here’s a link to a page on various methods used to clean lanterns http://www.railroadiana.org/lanterns/pgLanterns_Restoration.php
