Picked up a Remember the Rock magazine today at my LHS. It has an interesting article about a collision at the MP / CRI&P crossing in Lincoln on October 2, 1953. RI 375, a Whitcomb 44-tonner, ran into the side of a moving MoPac switching movement powered by MP 803, a Davenport-Besler 44-tonner. There are several photos, a couple of which show the MP unit.

This is the first time I’ve read about a collision between two 44-tonners, although the MP unit itself was apparently not involved, since the RI engine reportedly hit the fourth car from the engine on the MP movement. There was a gate at this crossing, although it doesn’t show in any of the photos. Photos show the RI engine knocked sideways, but not overturned. There is a good view of an MP whistle post and the limestone ballast.

It was the RI engineer’s fault.

This mag is Vol. 11, no. 1 and 2, if you’re looking for it.
