In memory of long-time MPHS member and contributor Tony Fey, who passed away on Nov 1st (see separate thread), this week’s photo is one taken by Tony while working as a Mop conductor on the Kansas City Subdivision, between Kansas City and Osawatomie, Kansas.

Tony took this photo on July 17, 1974, at Dodson, Missouri, from his northbound train, PSC (Pueblo-St. Louis-Chicago) as it was just coming off the west siding and onto the main track during a meet with southbound train KSA (Kansas City-San Antonio), which is moving down the east siding. These sidings at Dodson were lap sidings, overlapping so that longer trains could have running meets utilizing one siding and the main track.

The Frisco train is the regular local that operated between Frisco’s 19th St Yard in Kansas City, KS, and Clinton, MO, on the Clinton Subdivision.
The Frisco used Missouri Pacific track between Dodson and BV Jct, near Leeds, after abandoning their parallel line in 1967. The Frisco line originally crossed the MP main track and east siding at this location, known as SN Tower, and then ran on the west side of the MP alignment to near Leeds. The Frisco crew is waiting for permission from the MP dispatcher to enter the MP and make the quick jaunt north to BV Jct.

I was born near Dodson and continued to visit family in this area while growing up, so this photo is especially significant to me having witnessed many similar scenes. I thank Tony for capturing this moment during his railroad career, and for his friend Lance Garrells for scanning it.

That’s a great photo, Ted. Thanks for posting.

By the time I got to work on this portion of the railroad (1989), things were much different. The tracks were realigned and the two sidings had become one. The Frisco (BN) track was long-gone, as well. The new 71 Highway and trash mountain changed the looks of things, also.
