Got to my office the other day and found an email from Bob the train guy. This particular Bob is often at shows with all kinds of stuff, and he picks up stuff from who-knows-where. Not junk, just all kinds of wild model railroad stuff. So in his email, one of the hundred things he listed this week was a few Wright Trak 50′ mechanical reefers from 1956. I think they were FGE and WFE prototypes. I remember reading about this Wright Trak model when it came out, maybe five or more years ago. Think about the Athearn, and earlier Pacific HO and then Walthers, models of this car, which probably were first made not long after the prototype was built. For various reasons, Wright Trak started out as a very promising resin manufacturer, then fizzled after a couple of years. I actually bought at least one kit, of something else, directly from Wright Trak, and let’s just say that experience did not go well.
Long story short, I picked up two of these cars for maybe half their original price. Looking at the kit in the box, it looks pretty promising. But, and this is where this list comes in, I was aware that these cars were pretty similar to some of the early ART cars, specifically RMDX 100-174. Without a little research, I can’t say how close, but promising. I feel confident I can scrounge enough decals to do these cars, so let’s hope these are as close as I think they are.
