Jeff PletcherBill, it’s interesting, and somewhat puzzling, that the Mopac initiated the St. Louis-Mexico City sleeping car in 1962, an era time when the railroads, including the MoP, were turning negative regarding passenger service. It was about the time, I believe, that the MoP discontinued the Texas Eagle through sleeping car arrangements at St. Louis with the Eastern railroads PRR & B&O (with the possible exception of the Slumbercoach interchanged with the latter road). Perhaps there was a brisk market to and from Mexico that they tapped.
As a sidelight on this — I grew up in Ohio, where my high school (1960’s) Spanish teacher, an older widow, would periodically travel to Mexico during summer vacations utilizing the Eagle sleeping car, using the Pennsy to and from St. Louis. Of course I was insanely jealous.

I only saw the MoP E units operating on the MoPac proper. I never saw them east of St. Louis. A couple of photos are attached.
Jeff P.Bill, I found your initial post quite interesting. I was living in southern Illinois at that time, and saw the “National Ltd.” during the period in which MoPac cars were operating. However, I don’t recall seeing them in operation — it would have surely registered with me to see MoP cars in Amtrak service. I did see and photograph the MoP E units operating on the “National.”
MoPac’s Slumbercoach “Southland” was reportedly turned back to Budd in the 60’s and picked up by the Northern Pacific who renamed it “Loch Tarbert.” Amtrak later picked up the N.P. fleet of Slumbercoaches including “Loch Tarbert,” so I guess this is the closest MoPac came to having any of its passenger cars regularly utilized by Amtrak, indirectly via the N.P.

Thanks for your suggestion. Apparently the webmaster took down my listings, since they were over two years old (by the way, I received zero response to my listings on this forum). I’ve since sold some stuff on the O Scale Yard Sale site, but still have some items left. If they don’t sell on that site, maybe I will try once again on the MPHS Forum. I did have a couple of Forum takers on a few decals, but I still have most of those left. Not surprisingly, there aren’t too many people modeling the MoP in O Scale. I did sell some decals (through O Yard Sale) to a guy in Georgia I think who wants to model the “Texas Eagle” in O, my dream. He had been looking for “Eagle” passenger car decals for some time. I told him to send me photos when he’s done!

I have a few more photos at New Iberia and the line toward Franklin, in the 70’s. Let me know if you are interested in perusing them for your article. I lived in Lafayette at the time. I found the street trackage interesting. I photographed Amtrak’s Sunset running on the street, but could never catch any MoPac trains on the street. My email:

I lived in Midland around 1986 and occasionally got over to shoot slides at Big Spring. However, I have not yet digitized them — I am working through my stuff scanning a few at a time, and don’t know yet when I will get to the west Texas stuff. I recall taking photos at the engine service facility of the power off the local I think, and can’t recall what else I shot. For starters, I am attaching a shot of the freight station from when I passed through Big Spring in the 70’s. That’s all I have in digital format for now.
