I’m going with the same model as Charlie. It’s a Bachmann RS-3 and I actually found one cheaper with DCC and sound. I’ll have to replace the decoder, but I’ll take this one to the next swap meet.

Lots of images of the Bachmann model, so jumping right in to the disassembly and modifications. I’m going to start with the frame. The MoPac used a different fuel tank, so I needed to remove the old tank and some metal from the Bachmann frame.

I made cuts where the body shell mounting screws go through the frame to remove enough material for the new tank.

Posting a picture of the latest prints. This has the exhaust with the brackets, a number board and the radiator fan box with rounded rivets.

I found some 36″ fans in my spares box and they actually fit. If these work, I’m sure the Cannon & Co. fans Charlie recommends will fit too.

The last piece I want to try are the marker lights attached to the number boards.

Charlie – let me know if you see any other adjustments needed. Still haven’t gotten my own RS-3 to check the fit.

If anyone is interested, I could start a separate thread on how I did these. I’m using an Anycubic Photon resin printer. Much better resolution than a filament 3D printer.

    Charlie,

I put a couple early prints of the fan boxes in with the sample. Let me know about the bolts once you see them. I thought they were big too, but they print much smaller than you see in the drawing.

Hard to tell from the picture if these were rivets, bolts or machine screws. I can round them off so they look more like rivets.

The boxes will be rough on the bottom. The print settings take almost as much time as the drawing to get them right. Once set correctly, they will be easy to repeat.

Here is the fan box with number boards. Hopefully getting close.

    Charlie,

Let me know what you think about these brackets on the exhaust. I still have to see how well they print.

While I was at it, and again thanks to your measurements, I did these:

You should have samples by the end of the week.

You talked me into it. Here’s what I have so far. I used the dimensions you posted earlier. I may have to adjust the cutouts for the fans. I didn’t have these to try.

I can probably add the mounting brackets to the flange.

The radiator fan box has quite a bit more detail. The housing should be no issue, but the fan detail might be tough.

Once you get a chance to look at the exhaust up close, let’s talk measurements on the radiator fans.

One last post. Here’s the printed version with the SA castings.

I think I’ve got it figured out. Image below with the spark arrestor mount. The mount is a little thick for scale, but printing less than 1 scale inch doesn’t work well. It’s like handling paper and just looking at it wrong causes it to crumple.

I have a few printed, and will mail you a sample next week.

That image helps. I adjusted the size of the housing. I think it was too short before. It’s a scale 12″ tall now.

I moved the stack height to 28″. It looks like they should be the same height as the cab roof. Best I can tell, distance from the hood to roof is 24″, but that seems short.

Let me know thoughts and I’ll adjust the spark arrestor drawing based on this.

    Hi Charlie,

I’ve been following for awhile, since your first GP12. Great job on the conversion.

Once I pickup the correct RS model, I hope to build my own. With some of the detail parts scratch built, I drew the exhaust modification and printed on my 3D resin printer.

Wondering if I could send you a couple and have you compare to your model. A lot of guesswork went into the measurements. One example is the spark arrestor mounts. They seem too wide, but could be an issue with the size of the metal castings.

Hoping the attached picture gives you an idea of the differences. One is prior to the spark arrestor installation and the other is setup for the Details West casting. Let me know your thoughts.

    Thanks,

    Mike
