I’ve always been attracted to this 40′ car since I saw it in a siding in a CB&Q photo, the ‘Z bracing on the left side is unusual as well as the steel reinforcement plate below the doors. I like 40’ double door cars and I like seeing the Mopac Texas Lines cars on my layout. This car at least lasted into 1954 per the Kingsville, Texas reweight date and was modified from an automobile boxcar to a normal general service boxcar, note the stenciling on the left door ‘Door cannot be opened’ and the XM stencil on the lower right denoting a general service boxcar vs an XAP or autos. These models just reinforce all neat subsidiaries names they had before 1956. There wasn’t enough detail to tackle doing a modeling the car in the first photo I found but I just picked up a great shot off ebay a few days ago (attached below) . Am thinking of doing a sides using Evergreen plastic and Archer rivets and then having the two sides cast in resin. To build the model, the modeler would need a donor Wabash Automobile boxcar from F&C which they sell their bagged kits for $16. The donor kit would supply the ends, radial roof and underframe. The modeler would need to modify the Wabash underframe as the Wabash car had a fish belly whereas the StLB&M used channels.
If there’s enough interest I would work with Hubert Mask to do the decals. Not sure of a price until I see what the resin sides would cost but all proceeds would go to the MPHS as a fund raiser but would have to think the resin sides and decals would be around $20 plus a little for postage.
Just send a reply to this topic if you are interested in one. Will see where it goes from there, I know there’s some interest from Bill Welch on the resin freight car list so I’d probably have at least 10 sides as a start.

The problem with the Westerfield car is it has the wrong ends for the Brownie car. The MP 81000 series (Westerfield) has inverted ribs whereas the StLB&M 20051-20500 group had extruding ribs. The F&C kit is available for $16 bagged which is a pretty good deal. I’ve built the F&C Wabash automobile boxcar and it goes together nicely. No fit issues. Lettered it as NJI&I car.Hubert Mask just contacted me and he’ll do the decals.
So far I’ve had one interested party but will but something on the steam era freight car list and resin freight car lists to see if there’s interest there too.
July 20, 2015 at 1:22 pm #6847peggyrothschildParticipantBill Welch of the resin freight car list is helping with this model. He sent me some information on making up the T&G wood sides so the boards will appear to be individual and I won’t be using Evergreen’s car siding as the grooves aren’t prototypical. Bill also sent three more photos I didn’t have. He also has a guy that will cast the sides. I’m going to start on the masters after I talk to Bill at the RPM next month about constructing the Z bracing. He’s agreed to do the rivets using ones harvested off Athearn blue box cars.

In comparing the photo to one of my completed Westerfield kits there are several differences besides the ends. The number of the bracing members on the sheathing as well as the shape of the side sill. Lower right corner appears to have a grab iron between the stirrup step and bottom of the ladder.
I would be interested in a model of this car as it would be appropriate for my 1929 era. Any builders photos of this car. Guessing originally had vertical stem-winder and K-brakes?
July 28, 2015 at 6:43 pm #6909peggyrothschildParticipantHere’s an early photo but I wasn’t planning on doing decals for the GCL in it’s as delivered scheme. I think most guys will purchase the steam to diesel era decal set as in the first photo in this topic.

Met with Bill Welch and other resin kit builders at RPM this weekend on how to build the sides. Picked up the Wabash automobile boxcar from F&C (bagged $15). Also have someone to cast the sides for us. Am going to draw up a scale drawing to get the dimensions and overall size and probably start on the car masters in September. Bill is going to add the rivets and Hubert will do the decals. Am hoping to keep the price around $15 for the two sides and decals and instructions. Once this gets closer to production will put out a note on the steam era freight car list. So far have only heard from four MP modeler said that they are interested so let me know so I can get a good count for the casting process.August 11, 2015 at 2:57 pm #7049kenrisParticipantI’d be interested in one or two if the 1950s era decals are produced.

The decals will match the car in the first prototype photo with the Kingsville light weight being February 1954.

You can send them a check and ask for the flat kit or you can pick up one of the models at a train show where F&C has their tables.August 21, 2015 at 5:14 pm #7124jymrpvzdnskxnqtcParticipantCharlie,
Thanks. Is there a kit number or just ask for the Wabash auto car?

Kit number is 3504. This is the flat kit with AB brakes.
