Here’s an original Bozo Texino saved from the old Taylor, Texas depot by Bill Hansen (dec). This was drawn on the wood trim around one of the doors. Bozo Texino’s real name was J. H. McKinley. He hired out on the I-GN in Laredo and his original nickname was Bozo Laredo. When he moved to San Antonio he changed it to Bozo Texino.

About what year would Mr. McKinley have left railroad employment? I remember seeing this drawing on reefers that had to have been done in the 1990s. Is there a possibility that there is/was a Bozo Texino II?

There’s a great little DVD out titled “Who Was Bozo Texino” http://www.billdaniel.net/who-is-bozo-texino/ by Bill Daniel best $18 you’ll spend this month.

The original artist died, I believe, in the late 1950’s but his drawing of the cowboy smoking the pipe was copied by many hobos and probably still is.

From a mouse-eaten copy of a 1936 Railroad Stories “pulp” magazine, Bozo Texino provides an estimate (perhaps embellished slightly??) of the number of autographs that he had provided to receptive boxcars. He also notes the use of waterproof chalk for longevity.
