Does anyone have information of the wreck of GP35 630? It subsequently became 2008 after the rebuild and then 2600.

I would like to know when and where. I am also curious if anyone knows what position in the train it was when wrecked. Was in running long hood forward because it appears the nose and cab survived. But, the battery box doors are beaded.

I am very curious as to the extent of the damage and what needed to be replaced.

Search the thread I started in this same section entitled “Morley Bridge incident”.

When & where: Morley, LA, on September 17, 1973

I do not know what position 630 was in when the pair of Geeps went into the canal.

    Brian,

Not sure if you’ve seen these pictures of 2600 and 2008.

So…if I had to guess…since the two units had their hoods sheared off (tragically killing the crewman)…I would say the GP38-2 and GP38 hoods were ordered or built from EMD components by MP shop forces at North Little Rock.

Due to the extent of damage to 2600 (nee 2008; 2007:1; 630) it only makes sense now…seeing the GP38 style hood, clean air room, and radiator package. I would also guess that the GP35 was trailing and running long hood forward…with the GP38-2 taking the brunt of the bridge counterweight impact.

And, the engine being submerged in water probably didn’t help the prime mover, either.

2600 still has the GP35 clean air room. Tell tail sign is the door and no weep holes. At least the external look is a GP35 clean air room. Probably with GP38-2 internals, inertial intakes and raised inertial dust bin. Dimensionally though it is a GP35 room. The dust bin being used on this unit would not fit a 38-2 clean air room.

So…the hood is clearly cobbled together…

At any rate, the inertial intake screens are GP38 style…the only other GP35m to have those…at least according to my photos is MP 2613.

All others had the mesh-style screens…so it is indeed an interesting rebuild…that started another in-house project.

Interesting that all other units retained their three fan lineup over the GP35 radiators…
