The yard shown in that photo is still there. This photo from last October is almost from the same spot.

When the MP pulled out in 1982, this yard and approximately 3 miles of track were sold to the SP to continue service to the sugar mill in the right of the calendar photo and another one 3 miles north of town. Several years ago shortline Louisiana and Delta acquired this track and as far as I know still operate it.

The sugar mill in the calendar photo closed about 15 years ago and is now dismantled. It was a steam mill and the mill whistle was a beautiful three chime that I heard 4 times a day during cane grinding season, growing up in New Iberia.

10 years before the calendar photo I was a high school kid spending many happy hours on the bench on the porch of that yard office, watching those same geeps switching back and forth.

Mid afternoon is early for the northbound train to leave. As kids we never saw it, leaving around noon to go home for lunch and get out of the heat. If only we’d been able to drive.

I’m slowly working on an Eagle article about the MP in New Iberia.

    Patrick,

I have a few more photos at New Iberia and the line toward Franklin, in the 70’s. Let me know if you are interested in perusing them for your article. I lived in Lafayette at the time. I found the street trackage interesting. I photographed Amtrak’s Sunset running on the street, but could never catch any MoPac trains on the street. My email:
