Another new model, announced within the last few days:
The MP only got 250 cars, not that common amongst all the single-sheathed cars that came along a few years later. Not easy to tell from the image exactly what brake gear the model has, but the lettering appears to be the post-1930 style with simplified AAR dimensional data.
MP was an early adopter of geared handwheels, specifically Ajax, on many cars of this type, so more info may be required to determine exactly how this model is equipped.

June 5, 2019 at 11:55 am #9404Bud MossParticipantThis looks like a really nice model. Question. By the 1950s would these have had ladders rather than individual grab irons? I wonder if these could be put in MOW service. Jerry Michels

I’m 99% certain that these cars never received ladders but always retained the individual grab irons. As Ron point out there was only 250 of these owned by the MP. Due to the small inventory and being built in 1918 they didn’t get rebuilt into steel cars as the 40’ SS cars did nor have I seen any evidence of them going into MoW service. All probably due to the age of the underframe and the MP having a larger inventory of the 1926-27 SS boxcars available for rebuilding. The Accurail USRA Mopac model is quite nice and after replacing the cast on grabs with wire ones it’s hard to tell it’s not a resin kit. The Accurail MP lettering is well done to and at $16 + $6 shipping (eBay search today) you can add a couple to your fleet without spending a lot.

When asked, their customer service replied “We do not use plastic couplers on any of our HO rolling stock. Our models all come with metal #5 equivalent couplers, but we are looking into tooling a new scale head coupler in the future. “
Still, $49.95 is pretty steep for any RTR freight car.
June 12, 2019 at 1:31 am #9412princessclyne69ParticipantNow that I’ve looked at the Accurail USRA box (Accurail 4619), I’d agree. I haven’t tried carving off grabs on a car like this, but I’ll be doing that fairly soon. I can see it’d be easier than carving off ladders from a steel car. The model does have the vertical brakestaff, but if you’re going to carve off grabs, then adding an Ajax power brake won’t be that hard.
And yes, the lettering is quite good, for what I can see on the website.

I noticed looking at their web site the Mopac car comes with K brakes and not AB brakes so that places the car prior to 1950 as K brakes were no longer allowed in interchange. They are doing three road names with AB brakes Mopac just wasn’t one of them unfortunately. -
