Bill Pollard, David Huelsing and I had an email discussion this morning on the Sunshine Special hand fans. All I’d seen were those in mint condition on eBay. Leading me to believe these were modern day reproductions. But I bought one this morning ($7.00) plus shipping as I wanted to take a better look and I wasn’t out much money. The seller said it had been in “a linen drawer for decades” so if I take their comments for face value then these maybe truly period items. I’d still curious why I’ve never seen these at train shows over the past 40 years and why none are wrinkled or soiled from useage. As Bill commented in one of his emails the artwork certainly looks like period Mopac advertising and perhaps a box of unused fans were found and made their way on to the collector’s market.

Why would you need a hand fan on an air conditioned train?

Fan arrived yesterday and it’s either a reproduction or an original piece that was never used and taken home and saved due to the graphics. Either way I didn’t pay over $12 with shipping.

    Here’s some photos. 7B729EC1-49DD-420D-B673-2F4D2C41E802.jpeg[/attachment:30hverdo]5E66609B-C47B-4F6A-B602-01ED41E971A8.jpeg[/attachment:30hverdo]6745633E-C61F-42B9-945E-A74B835383BB.jpeg[/attachment:30hverdo]

As to it’s purpose it’s an advertising piece and wasn’t intended for train use. When these advertising fans were no homes and few businesses had air conditioning. So advertising an air conditioned train with something to keep you cool was a natural fit.

It’s pretty nifty no matter what. I think the design would make a great T shirt.

If a T-shirt along this topic was ever considered, it MUST contain the slogan “Its 70 in the Sunshine when its 100 in the shade.”
