I have an Airslide hopper in HO scale from ScaleTrains. In fact, I’m pretty sure I bought it from the MPHS company store.

Anyway, the model is a blue-gray color. I remember freshly painted covered hoppers just before the merger and even after the merger having this blue-gray color. Most photos only show the gray, but a handful of photos from the mid 80s shows the blue tint. After some time all these cars seem to have had the blue fade out completely leaving only gray paint behind.

When I was a kid in the 80s I painted several of my covered hopper models in a blue-gray color I mixed up after seeing several freshly painted cars roll by. At this time the cars were in UP paint, but retained their MP reporting marks. The blue-gray color appeared to be the same color I remembered from the last cars delivered before the merger.

What color is this blue-gray color? Does anyone have a source or a drift card? Did the MPHS supply ScaleTrains with color information for their Airslide model? If so, what color information was provided?

    Ryan,

Look at Tru-color paint #274 – Mopac covered hopper gray. It was the gray used on the FMC 4526 covered hoppers and was matched to a paint chip of the period from what I recall. We worked with Scale Trains on the model and referenced that paint color.
