All,
I unknowingly purchased an Atlas O scale Gold GP7 in the eagle colors with road number 4206. I haven’t decided if I want to keep it and build a one-town Proto:48 module or sell it. I’d like to model late fall 1959 to early 1960 time period. Looking at period images from 1955/56 and 1961/62 I can’t determine when the spark arrestors were added or side sills were cut out. Does anyone know the dates?
It appears at that time they had single chime air horns, radio cabinet/fire cracker antenna, and it’s a toss up on number board font.
A cursory look at the model reveals it needs poling pockets added, draft gear improved to scale, MU hose receptacle box modified, and a cab sunshade track added.
Any assistance for late 1959/ early 1960 appearance would be appreciated.
Thanks!
Nate
I haven’t figured exactly when either of these programs was begun. I think the first spark arrestors, the early style, started to appear around this time, and possibly only in areas where they were most needed, such as rural areas in the Midwest.
Cutting out the side skirts may have started earlier, maybe by mid-fifties. That work and the addition of MU connections to the front ends of F units may have happened at about the same time.
