I have two boxes of 8×10 photos marked Joe Collias Collection, problem is about half the photos appear to be others photos that Joe reproduced & sold, but are not his. Some have other photographer names on the backs.
Should we continue to label this as The Collias Collection, or separate them? Many of the photos are ACF Photos, and I have a separate collection for them already, so there is certainly redundancy.
Should I maintain the collection as is, or divide it up? My thoughts are to leave it boxed up as is, but as I start to scan them, I may separate them in the digital collection, which will be the access copy for the photos anyway.
Joe used to get mad when he saw his own photos in print showing from ‘the collection of…..’ I’d say if it’s clearly an ACF photo we give credit where credit is due. If a photo from Robert Foster then you could say photo by Robert Foster with the date and location. These guys traded hundreds of photos back in the day. He donated them to the MPHS so isn’t now the MPHS Collection?
Charlie – I think you are right. I’m sorting the photos by equipment type to make it easier to search when people are looking for something (diesel, steam, passenger, freight…etc). I think I will separate out the known Collias photos and make a special collection for him (which will basically be our steam collection), the others can get divided into proper categories.

Sounds like a plan.
