When did MoPac discontinue the use of cabooses in favor of FRED on their freight trains?

Late 1980s or early 1990s. As late as 1981 they were still building short bay window cabooses, building the main bodies at DeSoto and finishing them out at Sedalia. Jerry Michels

Rear end devices were introduced to the railroads in 1982-83 but the implementation was by division and labor agreement. Generally the FREDs didn’t get fully used system wide until 1989-90 well after the UP merger. So if you’re modeling the MP prior to merger trains still had cabooses.

I remember MP cabooses, especially the short bay window ones, in New Orleans until at least the very late 1980’s, on transfer runs past my house on the NS “back belt.”

KCS was still running F unit slugs on the same line at that time too. O the golden days! The last vestiges of Classic Railroading!
