From the smoke, many of these might have been from the back of a moving train.
Yes they were mostly shot from the back platform of a business car. Barriger travelled the country taking photos of railroad infrastructure for the Reconstruction Finance Corporation.

Has anyone published when these were taken? Negative IGN 109 has a Mopac diesel switcher in the shot. I’d thought most were in the mid-1930’s but the early EMD switcher would place it later.
Most were taken in the 1930’s, but he was an avid photographer throughout his entire career working for several railroads, and probably usually travelled by business car. I believe some later ones are also in color. If you need a date on a specific photo, I’m sure Nick Fry could help with that. The later photos are usually more specific to whatever railroad he worked for at that time.
