Anyone ever heard of MFA Oil? Ted Culotta’s Essential Freight Cars #45 contained a picture of an ACF 2 dome Type 11 car

MFA originated as a farmer’s co-op. There actually two divisions, if you will, nowadays, at least locally: the co-op and the oil company. Separate but connected.

Missouri Farmers Association; had feed mills and general stores all over rural Missouri. Also sold motor oil and had gas pumps with the stores. I’d not see a tankcar with their logo before. Back in the 1950’s and earlier farmers could take eggs to the MFA Exchange and trade for items in the stores. Obviously the destinations for these would have only been Missouri towns would be interesting to know where the oil and gas originated from.

Here’s a color image of the MFA shield (I have my wife’s grandfather’s MFA member sign in the garage). The white stripes on the tank car appear to wider than the red ones and on this shield they are equal. At least you have something to work with. What a great photo! The large MFA flour mill in Washington, MO, was torn down in 2019 after being unused for years. Now new condos have taken its place. Sad to see the old building gone, but Front Street in Washington is really becoming a beautiful place, although not very railroad-oriented. I remember boxcars being loaded with flour at the MFA in the 1960s. I think the MFA switched to trucks before covered hoppers became the norm. Jerry Michels

I already knew about MFA but the tankcar was a new discovery. Apparently that division is still in operation from what I find on the internet but the details on the tankcar escape me.

I’m not sure. I only recall 1 resin 2 dome car and not sure if it’s correct or available. I contacted Tont Thompson who is quite knowledgable on tank cars and he has no info. I’m thinking maybe section an Athearn 3 dome to eliminate the center dome. Tony did tell me those reporting Mark’s ceased before WW II and we don’t know what it was after that

The domes on the Athearn are all wrong. I’m still looking for a single dome version

I’ve decided to do mine on a Walthers Trainline 3 dome car. Since it’s a foobe anyway, I used SHPX reporting marks and confirmed the car number is a “compartment” car of that gallonage
