I would recommend you pass on the Walthers model and get an Athearn Genesis GP15-1…which would be correct for the MP…right down to the dual grab iron ladders and extra jacking pads on some units.

The Walthers unit doesn’t sit at the correct height…as you can see in the catalog picture…and has inferior tooling on the shell, IMO…especially the door latches and the radiator intake sections.

That’s what I needed to hear, thanks. I thought something looked funny, it’s too high on the trucks, like Athearn blue box boxcars.

However, the Athearn GP 15-1 does not come lettered for MP.

Yes…they are out of production…but you can find them on eBay…Here’s a great price on a sound-equipped MP GP15-1:

    http://www.ebay.com/itm/Athearn-Genesis-ATHG68111-Missouri-Pacific-GP15-1-1587-w-Tsunami-Sound-NIB-/271956788677?hash=item3f51e345c5

The retail on this unit was $279.95…with sound. Occasionally, you can find non-sound units for around $150 on there…in MP paint…but that, IMO, is a steal.

I waited too long and the sale ended. I am not an eBay lurker. If anyone sees another one please let me know so I can jump on it.

I bought one. Picking it up tomorrow.

        Updates on the GP15-1:

Jenks Blue painted; Tru Color paint; decals are in process now…LOKSOUND V 4.0 sound decoder with two sugar cube speakers…and the EMD 12-645E sound file (new) from ESU.

Hey, Tom. What brand and model of speakers are you using?

                Kevin:

Here’s a link to them…they’re pretty cheap at Digikey:

I build the boxes or enclosures for them as follows:

sides are made from Evergreen strip styrene: .040″ thick x .250″ wide; cut to fit the sides; glued to the speaker sides…a small bead of clear silicone sealant is placed around the speaker sides on the inside before putting the box top on them.

The box/enclosure bottom piece is again made from .040″ styrene and is:

                  .595″ x .790″.

I have tried the speakers with the cones out and in…and not much difference…but the thicker the plastic…the less vibration…and the sugar cubes can show off.

Tom, I appreciate the info on the speakers and enclosures. Can you post some photos showing installation in the body shell?

Yes. I plan on it…I’m posting the engine builds here now…and this one will get two speakers.

FWIW: I am very pleased with how this unit is progressing…and I am going to build one more “early phase 1″ unit with the 81” short hood now…possibly MP 1566…

I have purchased parts from both Athearn and off eBay to allow for later versions to be modeled…and will outline those differences as well.
