I grew up in the McPherson, Kansas area in the early to mid 60’s, residing in the small town of Elyria. The MoPac had a daily train through Elyria, running six days a week. It originated in El Dorado, traveling through Elyria, and running to Conway. My questions are related to this route. Does anyone know what type of motive power was used on this route? The trains were usually not too lengthy, except at wheat harvest time when a large amount of wheat was transported. I was also interested to know if passenger service ever traveled on this route in the early 1900’s.
A bit of trivia about this route. My grandparents lived in Elyria, having moved there in the mid 40’s. My grandmother told me that she was always cautious about when she hung her laundry on the wash line, as the soot from the steam engine pulling the train had a tendency to stain her white laundry.
