I got a photo of 984 off eBay, showing the unit freshly repainted in Jenks blue but before re-engining.

Most of the MoPac units were the phase 3, I believe this is the correct nomenclature, which do not have all those fancy louvers. Instead there are rectangular air intakes in the carbody, in the second and eighth hood doors forward from the radiator. At this time there are what appear to be filters mounted behind the plane of the door, inset an inch or so, possibly in three sections.

My question is, am I identifying these correctly? After rebuilding these units had a filter housing that projected two or three inches outward from the plane of the door, which looked like it was mounted over the door, ie. not tight against the door. Do I understand this right?

I’m aware there were other railroads who bought units of this phase. Was this original filter configuration a standard? Was the raised filter housing a MoPac special concurrent with the rebuilding?
