    Received wisdom tells us that the SLIM(&S, eventually) moved a great deal of ore and granite toward St. Louis.

    This begs the question as to what it moved the ore/rock with. Rock is heavy. Did the RR have specific ore cars, employ partially empty hoppers, specialized gons (a la the MR&BT’s inverted Vee-bottom gons)?

    One expects small loads spread out over many cars/axles, especially in the late 19th century.

    Any insight appreciated!

    This is a really interesting question Charlie, and I have not given it a lot of thought. Perhaps a closer look at what other, more well documented railroads were using at the time could help. I am surprised you did just pull out your Iron Mountain equipment register from 1895!!! 😆
