Here’s a 3D printed HO model of the 1887 Salina depot. The depot was restored by an architectural firm and they wanted a model of the structure. Jimmie Pottberg, Missouri Pacific Historical Society member, designed the kit and they will be available through the society. The kit is extremely easy to built having a center section, the two wings, the three roofs are one piece each, one piece windows and doors and brackets. I built two kits in less than four days including the painting. The model can be built as it looked in 1887 with a decorative cap strips on the roof peak, as it looked in the 1930’s through 1960’s and as it looks after it’s restoration. Watch the company store area for its release.
I worked in the Salina depot in 1975 and had a chance to ride the ‘Salina Loop’ local down to Marquette and back. The original MP mainline through Kansas was built through Salina in 1886 but a year later they made they built the mainline from Geneso to Marquette making the old mainline a loop.

It sits about two blocks from what’s called Salina Union Depot. This structure is, of course, on the UP (KP) main line, but it has still-existing evidence of a platform on the south side. Did the MP move into the Union Depot in later years?

I was part of the MP-UP merger team in Kansas. Under the agreement where there were both railroads in a town or city the agreement specifically laid out what road would remain and take over the customer base. At Salina the MP agency was taken over by the UP. The Salina agency or CSC was open until 1985-86 until we’d contacted all the former MP customers that they now would call the UP in Salina for conducting business. So no, the MP never moved into the UP facility. -
