Friends,
I have been struggling to find any historical photos of a St Louis, Iron Mountain and Southern Boxcar. I found this photo from McPherson, KS with such a car spotted, but quite blurry.

Does anyone have an example? I am working on lettering some cars for my layout, and found a decal set from K4 Supply, but would like to have a reasonable facsimile.
I do have a copy of Charlie’s book on the railway. It has a couple of caboose and locomotive photos, but I did not see any boxcars.
Thanks All,

Here’s a 36′ truss rod IM boxcar having grain doors applied at an elevator in Nebraska. The dimensional data is under the car number on the left side and the capacity is on the right side which was later swapped by the ARA and standardized for the industry. This is a scan off a cabinet photo I have and I scanned at 1,200 dpi to try and get all the details; Unfortunately this is as clear as the image got. If you click on the image you’ll get a larger one and click again it gets larger still. Perhaps you can make out the smaller stenciling. I can read “post no advertisements” above the car number on the right and the car number on the door with ‘air brakes’ but the the rest is too soft of a focus to make out. There’s no date on the front or back but I assume the preWW1 era. Interesting door locking appliance on the right side of the door vs the left also no stirrup or hand holds on the left side which I’d never noticed before.Charlie

November 6, 2019 at 9:53 pm #9531queen_ga2_2ParticipantThank you Charlie. This is a fantastic find. I will post pictures of model cars as I have them.
Patrick, the decals are in the K4 Decals store on eBay. There are two versions.

Just search on ‘iron mountain decals’. They are for the 50’ furniture and buggy car. The lettering style is different for the car below and I think it’s a post1900 IM standard.November 7, 2019 at 10:10 pm #9534queen_ga2_2ParticipantDecember 11, 2019 at 9:09 pm #9557queen_ga2_2ParticipantAnother Iron Mountain example appeared today online with a caption of “Railyards near Kansas City Union Station looking south to Hospital Hill ca 1917”. Photo attached.
