I’m trying to model a steam era MP combine but the only era-correct combine model I can find in Roundhouse’s Pullman Palace car. Did MP own any of these? If not, any ideas? Photos? Thanks.

What era are you modeling? The Bachmann heavyweight combine is probably the closest to a MP car. The old IHC combine doesn’t have enough windows.July 14, 2018 at 2:37 pm #6855tqvfjminParticipantLoosely, late ’30s to diesel transition. My layout (under construction) is somewhat small and the Spectrum cars, while nice, have derailing issues on it . I have had better luck with well tuned up Athearn blue box coaches (thanks to the MPHS decal sets) but they don’t make a combine – just baggage and RPOs, hence my interest in the Pullman. But if MP never had any or had retired them earlier, that doesn’t work.

The Pullman combine would probably be down graded to a MoW car by your timeframe.July 14, 2018 at 11:47 pm #8861bargetanikaParticipantCharlie, the combine that is in the photo of the Bagnell Branch you post from time to time ….. isn’t it something like this?

The Bachmann combine is pretty nice and comes up on sale from time to time. I have two.

I couldn’t get the link to work on the Concor model. Tim mentioned he can’t run the Spectrum combine as they derail on his layout.July 15, 2018 at 2:24 am #8879bargetanikaParticipantJuly 15, 2018 at 2:33 am #8880bargetanikaParticipantThese are 60’ cars but they may work better on a small layout. I have two of these 60’ combines running on 24” radius curves and a few no. 5 switches and they do great.
July 23, 2018 at 2:38 am #8894tqvfjminParticipantI tried running one of my derailing Spectrum cars in between my pair of Athearn standard passenger cars and it ran my entire layout clean. Maybe I can use a Bachmann combine after all: Athearn baggage, Bachmann combine, Athearn coach.
July 24, 2018 at 12:29 am #8895peggyrothschildParticipantSounds like a good plan. There might be a NYC heavyweight combine coming in plastic and resin in the future that might be a good stand-in for a MP car but I have to see the window arrangement to be certain.
July 26, 2018 at 7:23 pm #8811bargetanikaParticipantHave you tried changing your wheelsets on your derailing cars?
August 18, 2018 at 2:03 pm #8958tqvfjminParticipantJust an update. I had previously ignored Patrick’s earlier reference to the 60′ Walthers (nee: Rivarossi) cars as I have had really bad luck with older Rivarossi cars in the past. However, after some research, I discovered that the ones Patrick is talking about were newer versions and much superior cars. Although out of production, I found one on e-bay and am very happy with it.
