I ordered several of the new Tichy decals for MoPac freight cars, and they showed up promptly. The catalog claims that the lettering is fused onto the backing, and they do indeed appear to be almost slightly three-dimensional. Don’t know yet how opaque the lettering actually is.

I compared the sizes to the existing lettering information, and they look good. There’s only one set of dimensional information / weight data per decal, but for garden variety use and for use on that specific type of car, that’s not an issue. It could be if you need different car classes or reweigh data.

The 10267 set has both the older 7″ reporting marks and 7″ numbers in the DeSoto font, and the 9″ later font with 9″ reporting marks and 9″ numbers, used on flatcars from (apparently) the beginning of the new lettering styles in 1961. Sometime around 1965, perhaps a little later, all cars got 9″ numbers along with the 9″ reporting marks, so this lettering is useful for that. My only criticism is that the number of available digits on the sheet is somewhat limited, although the original decal set was actually intended to letter a specific car series rather than being a generic data set.

In short, a step forward. I recommend these.

Tichy bought the artwork from Gerry Glow. Gerry was known for making his lettering from a photo and not relying on a computer font. He use to offer a complete set capacity, load limit and light weight and location for both sides are you saying they are only including one side?

No, there are enough data to letter both sides of the car, if that’s what you’re asking. But there is only one choice of load limit and light weight, and one road number plus a set of ‘0123456789’ numbers, rather than a number jumble that could include several plausible numbers. I think these are exactly the same as the old Glow sets.

The 10267 set does actually have enough data to letter two cars, one with DeSoto lettering and one with lettering good for a similar car in the later lettering style. It would also be possible to do a renumbered car, with the data in the older style and the six-digit number in the newer style.

Now there are a few more MP decals on the Tichy website. The stock car and the early ACF covered hopper decal sets are available, as well as one for an early composite gon (Intermountain kit) in the 50’s DeSoto lettering. There is also a set for the LNE PS-2 covered hoppers that the MP bought to go with their homebuilt ones. There is also a set for a double-sheathed boxcar noted as ‘built 1913’ but the number is in the series of 500 USRA boxcars. Specifically, this is the car number in an early (as-built?) shot and then shot again by Charlie Winters thirty years later in Wichita.

Diagrams for this boxcar should be shown in the Society publication ‘Freight Car Diagrams 1900-1951’ but I don’t have it with me.

All these decals have the Desoto lettering styles accurately captured.

I just bought a handful of the Tichy MP decals in O scale. However, I don’t have the background on the cement hopper lettered with the “LNE” background. What was the LNE for?

    Thanks…gregg

These are PS-2 cars were bought new from Pullman-Standard by the Lehigh & New England for cement service, which was a major and apparently their almost only source of on-line revenue. The L&NE shut down within a couple of years, and this group of cement cars were sold to MP. Other LNE cement cars were sold to UP. I don’t have access to a roster right now to cite specific car numbers, but they were placed into a number block after the original MP cars since they arrived after the renumbering.

MoPac repainted the cars, but over time the large black LNE logo started to show through the paint, so they were pretty recognizable by the late sixties into the seventies.

MoPac’s own cement cars built around that same time were actually built by DeSoto shops using major components furnished by P-S but with slightly different assembly details, principally at the ends just below the roofline and in the detail of roof to side attachment.

Yes, the Tichy decals are 3 dimensional. They are raised and not flat lettering like we are used to.

I do not think that is good. Kind of like resin printing rivets like Archer offers. Not a good idea for lettering.

The 3D is a deal breaker they need to find another source to make their decals. I also read (from Tichy) that some of the decals weren’t sticking to the surface and they were recommending using watered down Elmer’s glue to fix the problem.

What about steam locomotive decals? I had some of Jerry Glow’s. If not available here , where? Micro scale has some but they are listed as “white”.
