You didn’t provide a specific time period . Some time back Atlas offered a pair of 40’ StLB&M GSC steel wood racks, typical of early 1950’s. I’ve got them and several other road names as well. I’ve always thought of wood yards, where these racks were loaded, as only being very light rail sidings often through a gravel parking area, where pulpwood was literally dumped off and piled up for rail pickup. Photos I’ve seen of wood yards show them to be very messy places, ie, great for modeling.
Earlier posts here have said that at one point the train crew was responsible for loading the cars when set out if wood was already there. I don’t remember who told that story but maybe they can re tell it.
bargetanikaParticipantHow do I find and join STMFC?
bargetanikaParticipantIs the eBay item bogus? Or just old and beat up? Charlie I take it you mean a cloth cap in the classic striped engineer style, though you used to could get them in plain dark blue. Haven’t seen a solid color one in decades.
bargetanikaParticipantWhat exactly is it? Did it go on a hat? It looks really beat up and old (like me 😮 😆 ). Or is it something new that was “weathered.” What would a real one look like?
bargetanikaParticipantI am so very ready for this book. To me the M-I is the short line version of the MOP, MP lite in some ways. Being way down in Louisiana I have no first hand familiarity with the M-I but the chapter and photos in Mopac Power sold me on the appeal of that little road a very long time ago.
Way back when we were kids, we’d see M-I boxcars down in New Iberia with only the buzz saw and “M-I” for the reporting marks. My buddy thought they’d forgotten to put all of the “P” on. 😮 😯 😆 . I had seen Missouri Illinois on other cars but had a hard time convincing him otherwise.
Author Charlie, after this will you show us more of your layout?
bargetanikaParticipantbargetanikaParticipantOh OK. PR kiddie ride. Any photos?
bargetanikaParticipantWhat’s the Baby Eagle?
bargetanikaParticipantWelcome William. I too have a small layout with Mopac elements. I started out wanting to duplicate a branch back home and got a lot of information about it from the MPHS, however I soon found that my space wouldn’t allow it so I reverted to what I have now.
bargetanikaParticipantWelcome, Joel.
bargetanikaParticipantDidn’t the Iron Mountain do olive green boilers and yellow lettering? Maybe even oxide cab roofs? Sounds stunning. Any better confirmation of these colors?
bargetanikaParticipantA lot of research went in to this one.
Makes me wonder why MP didn’t puts nice red sheet metal buzz saw on tenders, sort of like the Katy did. Looks kind of good, I think,
bargetanikaParticipantIt’s a steel car.
bargetanikaParticipantI have an Accurail ART ice service reefer. It’s boxcar red with white lettering. How prototypical it is, can’t say, but it’s good enough for me.
bargetanikaParticipantShouldn’t the NOT&M be colorized on this map? What was its status in 1936?
