Bill, I’m glad you are enjoying the CD. It was put together by the MPHS Digital Archives Team which includes Bill Pollard, David Huelsing, Ted Ferkenhoff, Charlie Duckworth, Jim Rose and myself.
We are adding new items to the MPHS Archives collection every week. Currently, we are negotiating for a rather large collection of images from a well-known collector. I encourage everyone with an interest in seeing these archival images and drawings to make a regular contribution to the MPHS. Dues cover the cost of the magazine and the calendar. Very little is left after these items are paid for.
I saw a message in this BB where a member asked interested parties to consider making a $10.00 a month donation. This could be a significant source of income to help obtain and make available many MoPac related images, drawings, etc. There is a link to make a donation using PayPal located on the home page at mopac.org. Just click on the “Home” link above to take you there.
clemmie_doris12ParticipantThis piece of equipment is generally referred to as a car shaker. A search using that terminology, might be more fruitful.
As for the actual commodity, it would have to be crushed limestone without fines or else it would have to be a short move in absolutely dry weather. Finely crushed limestone sets up like concrete when it gets wet.
clemmie_doris12ParticipantI’m interested in Jasper, MO. Steve McVey took several images that are in the MPHS collection.
clemmie_doris12ParticipantRon,
We have an index in progress that was drawn from the original index that was posted on the old website. The ball is pretty much in my court. I have one year of older issues to update and a few of the latest issues need to be added and we will have a somewhat finished product. I say somewhat because we will allow for feedback and improvements from those that take the time to review it. In working on this, I have noted quite a bit of difference between the authors of the various portions of this document. I will try to get the completed product posted within the next week or so. It will be available in Excel and PDF formats.
clemmie_doris12ParticipantMike,
We are glad to have you onboard. Your work on the GP12 parts is greatly appreciated.
clemmie_doris12ParticipantIt appears that there were several answers in previous posts that were right on the money, so I will not list them for a second time. But, I would like to add a little additional detail. The biggest factor preventing implementation has been time. I think that many of us that are actively involved have discovered that the time factor carries more weight than we initially realized. In addition, 2018 has been an unusually “bad” year on a personal basis for many of our active volunteers. Health and family issues have hit several of these folks, including me. When it comes to these situations, you know what will take precedence.
The groundwork has been laid and I am sure that 2019 will be a better year for these endeavors. Some volunteers have come forward, but we can use more. If you have an interest, please, let us know.
clemmie_doris12ParticipantWow, having not known Dickie during his early years, I would not have been able to identify him in this picture. Dickie is a good guy and I enjoyed working with him.
clemmie_doris12ParticipantThat was a common MOW vehicle in the late ’70s and early’80s. It was amazing, the amount of work the track gangs did with this vehicle. No fancy hydraulic stuff like you see, today.
I was on a lot of work trains in the early years of my career. As a consequence, I rode in the doghouse on one of these trucks many times. I even have a few hours driving a truck like this along with some hours in the roadmaster’s pickup. The atmosphere was a lot different at that time compared to today. There were no such thing as a CDL and the can-do attitude crossed craft lines with company assets being used by whoever needed it. You won’t see that today because everyone is too concerned about some form of liability.
clemmie_doris12ParticipantThe website has been fully updated and listings for all convention items and activities are posted. Time is running out, so don’t delay in signing up for anything you are interested in. If you wait, you could miss out completely.
Company Store listings are active for:
Registration
Train Trip
Box Lunch on the Train
Swap Meet Tables
Commemorative T-ShirtHere is the main link: http://www.mopac.org/annual-convention/207-2018-austin-tx
As an incentive to get your registration and other activities paid for, now, every paid registration and paid activity received by September 15 will give the member one entry into a drawing for prizes at the convention. There will be several items available. This is in addition to our regular door prize drawing.
If you have questions, send an email to [email protected].
clemmie_doris12ParticipantBill,
Thanks for the posts, including the photos. I think I will stick with the MT19. I like the convenience and the horsepower of the Onan engine. My car is NARCOA compliant and has a turntable. So, getting it turned is not a problem. I do have a manual, but thanks for the offer. Your trivia article was very interesting and informative.
I think my biggest issue is going to be finding a place to ride that is not too far away. Liability is such a big issue, today. It seems like a sponsored ride is about the only way to go.
When I get an opportunity, I will post some more photos.
clemmie_doris12ParticipantThe website was updated last week and you can register for the convention, pay for the train trip with the ASTA and reserve your swap table. Negotiations with the caterer for a box lunch on the train are ongoing, but we should have something finalized very soon. We are still working on a t-shirt design, but hope to have something by the end of August.

clemmie_doris12ParticipantJerry,
We don’t have enough people to do the work that is desired/needed. Several items that were on the old site never got moved to the new site. We have tried to migrate the worthwhile items, several times, but we still have more to do.
clemmie_doris12ParticipantI don’t really remember the other two, but I definitely remember Doug Ford. He was the daylight agent/operator at Pleasant Hill during the early years of my career.
clemmie_doris12ParticipantI wish I had a dollar for every one of those rod cars that I spotted to the wire mill at Carthage. I would be interested in several of these if someone ever decided to make an accurate model in HO. I know that is probably not going to happen, but who knows?
clemmie_doris12ParticipantNate, you are probably correct with your comments concerning a “true” MoPac car. But, it is still disappointing to not see one in the mix.
It appears that both the undec and kit versions of this run are sold out. Obviously, David underestimated the demand. -
