Here is a recent photo of the caboose while we were out on a “test run.” It’s coupled to a GP20 which, unfortunately, is not of MP descent.

clemmie_doris12ParticipantMy money says this is the intermodal area off Sarpy Ave. near Vandeventer Ave. There is a mill to the northwest of this complex and there used to be a smokestack near here, at one time. See the photo below which was taken looking south down Vandeventer Ave.from Clayton Ave. Manchester Ave. intersects with Vandeventer at the approximate location of the smokestack in the photo.

clemmie_doris12ParticipantThat’s definitely not in Kansas City. So, my best guess would be St. Louis. Now that we have the pickup truck model corrctly identified, it has to be an unloading facility for sure. Does anyone know the location for MP piggyback ramp in this area during this time frame? Or, it could be a stand alone auto ramp and they are using standard semi-trailers instead of the modern method which utilizes a modified tractor and a pintle type hitch.
clemmie_doris12ParticipantGiven the MP truck and the Ford vehicles on the ground, I would speculate that this was an inbound unloading facility. It may have been next to a piggyback ramp. That would help explain the MP tractor.
clemmie_doris12ParticipantOutside of the shop after decal work is finished.

clemmie_doris12ParticipantLooks pretty good. I’m sure Marilyn would pick up a few chiggers, if she got close to that area.
clemmie_doris12ParticipantFor the record, I worked in and through Atchison from 19992 through 2008. Also, my caboose, MP 13569, came from the museum in Atchison. Having worked there, I felt compelled to provide some details on this photo.
Obviously, there was quite a bit of railroad business when this photo was taken. My guess would be that this photo was taken in one of the warmer months of 1977 or 1978. In addition to the MP engine doing some switching, there must be an ATSF job, probably a local doing some work. From the looks of things, the engine is under or behind the photographer.
If anyone has any further input, please, feel free to post it here. That’s what this forum is for.
clemmie_doris12ParticipantAnyone have a suggestion for the date? I could guess and come fairly close, but I thought someone else might have some clues that would really nail it.
clemmie_doris12ParticipantThat is Atchison, KS looking east from the 14th St. overpass. Timetable direction for this territory was/is north/south. So, the GP15-1 switching the yard is headed north by timetable. The cut with the light blue covered hopper is sitting on the Santa Fe main. The track to the immediate left is the MP main. Note the two dwarf (pot) signals on this track. The MP office building is at the end of the bridge, to the photographer’s left. If you look over the top of the boxcars on the third track to the right of the Santa Fe main, you will see the ATSF freight house. It is a two-story rock structure which is now home to the Atchison Museum. The large elevator complex with the Pillsbury sign is no longer in existence.
clemmie_doris12ParticipantWow, you put those kits together real fast. Looks good. Those Rock Island guys did need more to do.
clemmie_doris12ParticipantDavid, Thanks for your effort and many hours of involvement with our archives. It is paying off with this and the other grants that you have been successful in procuring. As Charlie mentioned, UP is not very free with their money. It’s obvious that they see our efforts as being worthwhile. Keep up the good work.
To any readers/posters that see this and want to get involved, reply to this post and David will work to get you going. We welcome any and all serious inquiries.
