Here is an in-service photo of my caboose. It is currently on display at the museum in Atchison, KS. This photo was taken by fellow MPHS member, Jerry Michels. It is part of a photo collection contributed by Jerry which is offered on CD in the MPHS Company Store.

You going to reopen the windows in the carbody so Mrs can see if you’re hiding in there?

Nope. I think I will leave it as last modified. Replacing the existing glazing which has a slight haze will be expensive enough. The biggest issue with putting the removed windows back in is the frame. None of the FRA Part 223 glazing that is present on this caboose matches the size of those windows. They used a window meant for an end door on the conductor’s window when they upgraded the glazing.

I don’t think Marilyn needs to know when I’m in the caboose. But, that won’t matter during deer season. She’ll be hanging out of the crow’s nest with rifle in hand. ;)

I’m going to be painting this cab within the next two or three months. Does anyone have a good sample for the correct vermilion red color? Matching the color is no problem as long as I have a good sample. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks to fellow MPHS member, Bill Herbert, I have some additional photos from when my caboose was still in service. Bill took these photos back in the day and was very generous in offering them to me. They are all great shots, but I think the one from Kansas City is my favorite. I spent lots of time in KC during my career. Take a look at the dates. It looks like it went from one end of the railroad to the other in a relatively short period of time.

Bill supplied me with a very good paint chip, as well.

This caboose is finally on the move to a shop in Kansas City for repainting, etc. Here is a photo of the cab sitting in UP’s yard in Atchison, KS.

It has been quite the ordeal to get UP to accept this for movement by rail. As you can see from the previous posts, I have been working at this for over a year. Even with the extra time and expense, it has been worthwhile endeavor. It will be awesome to see this car move one more time on its home rails.

The caboose is now in the shop. If you are a Facebook user, I started a page for the caboose – Missouri Pacific Caboose 13569.

                        Looks great, Kevin!

That’s not your ride to the MPHS Convention….or is it??

                        Thanks for the photo’s.

I wish I could ride it to the convention, Gary. It is 100% roadworthy. I would love to keep it in operation, but I don’t have a railroad, Class I, tourist, or otherwise, that is close and willing to pull it.

Thanks, Bill. It now has one heck of a paint job. It will look even better when the decals and striping are applied.

For anyone that is interested, this caboose was painted with Imron Safety Red. In my opinion, it is a perfect match, if there is such a thing. I have checked and Rustoleum Safety Red is almost as good of a match.

Trackwork is progressing for the final resting place for the caboose.

Was Mrs L the section foreman? Looks like she did a great job.
