I’ll be attending the Mid-Continent RPM Meet in Benton, Kansas this weekend. I’ll have samples of just about everything I’ve printed so far, so I hope to get some good photos and some discussion going about not only the caboose parts, but the other things like joint bars, semaphores, structures and track laying tools. I’m happy you’re offering the Mopac EV caboose sides/ends/etc. I’m currently placing an order for the MP smokejack. I need one for my current KO&G project and at least 1 or 2 EV caboose models I want to do. Have you received a production smokejack and can comment on how they look? This is my first Shapeways order.

If anyone wants to split an order for the smokejacks please let me know. I will probably only use 3 or 4 of them total.

The new Athearn RTR model being discussed is a SD40 and not a SD40-2. The Missouri Pacific numbered ones they are selling were built in February 1969. I would think only a few minor changes would get an accurate 700-719 that you’re looking for.

I’ve had enough former Mopac employees tell me that the Mopac would occasionally run unit grain trains with 6-axle locomotives from Atchison to Concordia on my line and is a good excuse to include the model. Even today the KYLE runs SD45T-2s and I have photographed U30Cs in the past on the same rail. From my understanding the issue was the 6-axle trucks on the steam-era turnouts. They had a habit to stress and tear them up.

I’ve got one of the 3039 on order and look forward to receiving it. Here is a link to the announcement. I placed an order with Spring Creek Models where I was able to find a good price on it.

These would be the 1967 order, 700-719. They’re really still too late for me, and they weren’t permitted on my division as far as I know, but I’m curious.

Right side: high/high
Left side: high/high

Front truck only:

Right side: low/low
left side: high/low

Rear truck only:

Can you fully explain the brake cylinders so I can pass the information to Athearn? I am unaware of the rules with the cylinders and I want to understand what is correct and what is wrong and why match up like they do.

So for example are these combinations correct?

Right side low/low

Truck 3

I have a photo of 734 from 1972 showing it with high mounted brake cylinders. At some point when 734 was renumbered to 3034 it received high/low brake cylinders as the 1978/80 photos show. It was painted to the last Jenk’s blue paint scheme prior to February 1980.

The undated photo of 738 show it to have high mounted brake cylinders. When it was renumbered to 3038 the 1977 photo shows it still to have the high mounted brake cylinders.

The two photos of 3039 that I have – one undated and the other from 1984 both photos show high mounted brake cylinders. The 1984 photo shows 3039 with a double eagle. A photo from 1969 of 739 (previous number of 3039) shows it with high mounted brake cylinders.

The two photos of 3041 – one undated and the other from 1983 both photos show the high/low mounted brake cylinder option. I don’t have a photo of 741 to compare.

I’ve sent a message representing the MPHS Manufacturers assistance group to Athearn to provide assistance with the models and if you see anything else I’ll pass on the information. I now have a point of contact and hopefully will fix any issues.

I haven’t posted updates for a bit. I painted the trucks, coupler pockets, cupola roof, and underframe. I’m happy John Lee of Badger Airbrush assisted me with my painting questions. I think it turned out okay. Next I’ll focus on the body.

Attached is a builder’s photo of these cars and a photo of the cars later in life. I-GN 17850-17999, STLB&M 18000-18249, MP 34300-34599, and MI 3250-4299 were built by ACF in 1945 and STLB&M 18250-18499 and I-GN 18800-18999 were built in 1946 by Pullman-Standard.They all had 6′ doors with a Murphy roof and were 10’6″ inside height. Originally the number series that Intermountain chose was for the ST.LB&M car.

I’ve installed the roof grab irons for the copula and then scatchbuilt the Motorola “firecracker” antenna base. Hard part will be deciding on how to attach it to the narrow roof seams. I’m thinking about using a couple pieces of angle styrene to fit between the seams to provide a larger surface area to CA the base to the roof. I’m going to paint it separately to ease painting of the roof. I’m at the point that I’m ready to paint the underframe, trucks, and roof. I’ve started on the body of the caboose which will need two windows filled in and then general resin flash clean up and sanding.

I talked to Sam at Kadee and he said they were interested in doing the model, but it will be down the road. They do have the correct body style with cushion underframe and door. He did ask about photos for the cars. I sent a note to Jim Kinkaid to see if he has builder’s photos for the cars.
