David, I appreciate your input. You are the archivist and I know that you have more knowledge and training than the rest of us. I value your opinion quite highly. Not to blow smoke, but you have taken our archives to a completely new level. Don’t get yourself burned out. We are going to need you for a long time.
As to the issue at hand, what can we offer now? I’m open to comment from everyone that has access to this forum. As soon as our IT consultant gets all the testing done, we will be in a position to take advantage of the member-only capability. Given some of the comments on this forum, I really believe that a discussion by the BOD is in order before we go too far. In the meantime, we need to add some content specifically for the membership. Are there any suggestions?
I have been affiliated with organizations similar to the MPHS, in the past, and it got real ugly when the lawyers became involved in a big showdown. I have no desire to go down that road again. Do we have any details concerning the ICHS debacle? I would be interested in knowing the details.
As for our own situation, how bad could it get? I doubt that UP would care about anything that we do. Worst case, they would tell us to stop. I don’t think that most other contributors will care about what we do with their donated material. I’m going to need some more specifics about possible consequences before I get too excited about any legal issues.
I realize that there is a potential for this stuff to “migrate” as we offer it over the Internet, but that is the risk you take. I noticed that part of the scan I created of the MP-CEI document is being passed around on Facebook. I purchased this document on eBay and I intend to retain it, but the sharing of it does not really bother me. What have I accomplished if I hoard it? It may attract some new members. If nothing else, it provided some entertainment for some known MPHS members. For me, the bottom line is this – we have so much of this stuff, no one on the planet will have the time to “steal” all of it.
My biggest concern is not to expose the Society nor the officers and managers to any legal liability. Any other concerns are inconsequential. So, where does that leave us? I’m open to a discussion with the BOD, if that is what it takes.
Pat,
We have several individuals that would be willing to help you put together a presentation. If not this year, maybe later on. Think about it.
It’s a very nice shot, indeed.

Pat,
I don’t think any of the convention planners are on here. As far as I know there is no change to the schedule except for the opportunity to visit Settegast Yard to see the UP 1982 which is the MoPac heritage unit. This will probably be on Sunday morning.
As far as presentations go, we can only offer what people volunteer to present. If you or someone you know wants to give a presentation that is relative to Louisiana, we will be happy to try and fit it in the schedule.
I’m in for a few. I know of others that are interested in hoppers, as well. Do we have any kind of commitment from any of the manufacturers?
Slides should be stored in metal storage boxes. I would think that metal boxes for photos would be best, if there is such a thing. Has anyone done any research on the best archival storage methods for photos? The main thing is to get them scanned, at a high resolution, as soon as possible. These things won’t last forever, no matter what we do.
David, we have a member in Arizona by the name of Ted Ferkenhoff. He is a member of this forum. I believe his usernsame is TFerk. He is anxious to help us and he has experience with scanning etc. Why don’t you send him a PM and solicit his participation. I believe he has some material to donate as well. He would be a good asset. I know the distance will be an issue, but it can be overcome. Let me know what he says.
I guess I am a little confused. What exactly is it that we are trying to protect? If it is in the members-only section, why are we trying to make it unusable. Won’t access to this be part of the reason for joining? I suppose, if you want to go to the trouble, this might be reasonable for something that was available to the general public, but surely not the membership. There might be a few things that are so valuable that we don’t want to share them via the Internet. If that’s the case, we don’t expose them to misuse at all.
Maybe I was asleep, but my understanding at the last BOD meeting was to take some general steps (copyright notice, etc.) and then hope like heck the vast majority of people remained honest. Do we really want to spend time and effort with watermarks, etc.? If you do a good enough job to prevent a download, you have ruined the image anyway. I know that a lot of effort has gone into the archives and we don’t want to “give it away.” But, we don’t want to be like a library full of books that you can’t check out to read.
Help me to understand what the issues are.
John Golden can probably come up with a list. To be honest, I have not been monitoring the replies all that well.
I agree with David. I have a copy and I think it was a good investment. It would be worth having in the store.
It’s going to be a big crowd. Having bios in advance would save time and time will be short as it is. Any suggestions on how to go about this?
July 15, 2015 at 6:08 pm in reply to: For Immediate Release: Fallen Flags Series from Walthers #6784I’m not much of a passenger train enthusiast, but I do believe in a reasonable amount of accuracy for any model. With that said, I’m terribly disappointed with Walthers for not doing a better job with these passenger cars. I know that several folks within the MPHS did everything they possible could to assist Walthers in getting this right. For whatever reasons, they chose not to take full advantage.
The good news is that they did make an effort to create a MP train. There will be many buyers that will be happy with it, regardless of the accuracy. One can only hope that this leads to something better for all concerned.
Pat, I believe that the museum folks refer to that as the trolley barn.
Documents, including PDFs, work somewhat differently than images within this forum. When you include a document in your post, it will display as a link. When a user clicks on the link the document will download to his computer so it can be viewed. There is a message that will be displayed under the document link. It conveys information concerning the number of times this link has been clicked for viewing.
