I was surfing around the web and saw a couple of blogs started by Nate and Tom A on detailing a Mopac GP15-1. Care to share your models and any extra details you added. I know the model didn’t come with the spark arresters as a start

    Added:

Cannon 81″ short Hood; Used the walkway from a CNW to model the early version (MP 1570) of these units…I installed the correct Cannon battery box doors; correct Prime II air filter (not the supplied Salem Air Filter); and have installed custom steps (Brian Banna)…and a custom bell mount and scale side mount bell.

The picture shows the Athearn Bell site with hole filled; for the smaller, scale sized bell. Sergent couplers installed; along with scale buffer plates…and the usual spark arrestors (Details West bolt plates…with Plastic Athearn “Clone” spark Arrestors. This model will be at Collinsville this week…with paint and hopefully numerals…along with LOKSOUND 4.0 with two speakers installed; and LEDs.

Looking forward to seeing it in person. Does the Mopac version of the GP15 come with the spark arresters? They don’t show in the official Athearn model photos.

Amazing what is available to the modeler today. Worlds apart compared to my kitbash of a GP15-1 from an Athearn GP35 that I did back in 1976.[attachment=0:1dxq0f0q]image.jpg[/attachment:1dxq0f0q]

Beautiful work, Rene!!! Yeah, we’re spoiled now…the old school modelers were better at kit bashes like that. The Genesis model is the best model (regardless of engine type) IMO that Athearn has done to date…

    Charlie:

Yes, they come with Spark Arrestors…but you have to modify the plates by removing the oval exhausts…or use the Details West parts…I milled the plastic parts in my mill using a 1/16 four flute mill:

Once you assemble the parts…you can spot paint and weather them…if u are using the factory painted units…

    Charlie:

Here are two shots of GP-15’s in the range1575-1589. I have not found a shot of 1587 but I still may have one that has not been filed. I will be going through my boxes soon and maybe I will find a photo of 1587 because I know I took a lot of shots of GP-15’s.

Ah yes, the phase 1 GP15-1 project that like all of other projects that I have that are still not complete. Thomas, I look forward to drooling over your GP15-1s this weekend.

Nice kit bashing. I don’t recall seeing this locomotive on your layout. 8^)

No that locomotive would not be prototypical for 1929.

Alas the GP15-1 now spends its days in a display case along with a MP GP35, U30C 3319 w/o cab, a U23B with EMD cab and a few other assorted diesels from my teenage years. All are the older Athearn motors and drives, none are DCC. Probably will never turn a wheel again. Believe the GP15-1 was once setup for Dynatrol system.

Sorry I couldn’t get back on Saturday…probably flu or the dreaded summer cold…but I can’t even paint until (or shouldn’t) until the sinuses clear up…IMO.

I’ll post the pix of the GP15-1 on here…as it progresses…The frame is grit blasted and ready for primer/paint…I have to grit blast the gear towers after I clean them up…so I’ll shoot them all blue and finish the underframe before moving onto the shell.

Probably basic weathering on this model…as it’s going to work the sub coal branches…and should have the resident road grime and such.

Anyone have one of these? I’m thinking about getting one.

How do they run? Are they reasonably prototypical? What details are incorrect? Or need to be added? Would they have run down to New Iberia?

    Pat,

I do not own a Walthers GP15-1 so I’m unable to comment on running ability.

Yes, they would have run to New Iberia. A former Missouri Pacific engineer, Robert Currie, discussed the salt mine operations on his website plus on the Facebook Missouri Pacific page shared several photos. His is a great guy to discuss and answer questions. He said when the GP15-1s arrived they would use three of them and they were the premiere power used for New Iberia for the salt mine.

Attached are some of Bob Currie’s photos from New Iberia with GP15-1s.
