I have a bug to start a collection of O scale freight car equipment for the Mopac and model in Proto:48. I’m not giving up my HO equipment, but I want to have an option of modeling O scale as well. I’m looking for suggestions for accurate 40′ box cars, gondolas, and covered hoppers that would be suited to Proto:48 modeling. Does anyone make an accurate PS-1 40′ box car like Kadee does in HO scale? Is there a source for the panel-side 45′ gondola like the Mopac owned? I haven’t decided an era yet, but I’m thinking early 70s or late 60s. I haven’t decided on a locomotive yet.
Thanks,

I know Lee Freeman was making a T&P GP7 from an Atlas model to go with the Muley caboose he scratch built.Charlie

In terms of boxcars, Protocraft made fine brass MP versions of the 40’ Modified 1937 AAR 10’6” IH boxcar (pictured). I’ve also converted a few of the plastic Atlas MP boxes over to P:48. John Smith of Pecos River Brass made 100T Greenville gondolas, although my version is lettered (incorrectly) for CNW. In terms of older models, Rail Craft made 46’ MP panel side gondolas.

Atlas has a lot of nice O scale. Covered hoppers from early 2 bays up to PS 4750’s including the 3 and 6 bay cylindricals. All the ones I have seen have very nice paint jobs. They also have some 50′ PS-1’s, not sure about 40′ cars.I noticed some nice looking resin kits at the Collinsville RPM a couple of years ago. Be sure you check on availability of modern freight car trucks if you want to do some scratch building. There are several good P:48 web sites I’m sure you have found….the P:48 Yahoo group used to be good, but I haven’t been there for quite a while.
Good luck, Proto 48 looks like fun if you have the room. There is a lot of great looking stuff out there!

However, there are a couple of guys on Shapeways who have 3D printed parts (truck bolsters) which will convert Atlas 2R or 3R trucks to P:48 width. Norm Buchart at Protocraft is having some 70T RB trucks cast up in brass and are due later this summer or fall.
The Yahoo P:48 group is owned by Gene Deimling and is fairly active; he just moved it from Yahoo to Groups IO. Here’s a link if you are interested in joining https://groups.io/g/proto48

I have done some modeling of the MoP in O Scale in the past, but now wish to sell my stuff. Some would be suitable for Proto:48 I think. Some are built up and some still in kit form:
Still in kits:
American Standard Car Co. #5025 Airslide covd. hopper
Suncoast Models #505 Panel side gondola, double kit – 2 cars; same prototype as the brass gon shown in another post.Already built:
U.S. Hobbies 50′ Plug door box car, with “Cushion Car” lettering
All-Nation #3620 Caboose; this was marketed as C&O prototype but I modified it to MoPac’s Magor prototype following the article in the “Eagle” some years back.If you’re interested, it’s probably easiest to contact me directly by email:

I can send photos and other details, let me know.
