Some may be aware of the resin models produced by Chad Boas, who makes some interesting 50s-60s era models and details to allow modifying plastic models. He did a couple of MoPac flatcars a few years ago, for instance. These kits are only the resin castings, and sometimes a laser-cut wood floor if appropriate. You furnish grab irons, brake equipment, etc., as well as trucks and couplers. If you do a fair bit of car construction, you probably have a lot of those types of parts on hand anyway. He had worked with Jerry Glow to produce decals for these cars, where not commercially available, and now most of not all of these decals are available from Tichy.

I was browsing the available kits list a couple of weeks ago and spotted a new listing for the MoPac 70-foot express baggage. The kit came the other day, and I have to say it looks pretty decent. You get just what it says, sides, ends, roof and floor. The doors are molded in place. The 19-panel roof has rivet detail along the carlines and the edges. The resin material is dead white, reminding me somewhat of F&C car kits. The floor shows wood detail on the underside, and rivets on the crossmembers. There are some indications that might be the location of brake gear components, although the diagram does not show brake gear location, and I’ve never been under one of these cars, at least not with a camera.

The dimensions scaled out in comparison to the diagram of these cars, interior height, door width and height, all appear spot-on. The car length and distance between truck centers is somewhere around 8 to 10 inches too short, but I’m not about to do the kind of surgery that would correct that. If you’ve built more than a few resin cars, you can build this one. You’ll need to add a few small details like the electric light connections on the sides.

The Chad Boas kit list is available at least on resincarworks.com, and on sunshinekits.com, possibly other places. The diagram is available on a CD from MPHS.

I just ordered 12 of Chad Boas 70′ kits for the company store on Saturday. They will be $22 to MPHS members plus shipping. Not sure when I’ll have them in stock but Chad is pretty prompt.

Just to remind us what we’re talking about, here is the car in question. Believe it or not, these cars weren’t always rusty red on some dead-end siding.

I was thinking the Microscale MP diesel set with the small hood numbers could be used to finish this model. Buzz saw looks to be the same size as the one on the diesel cab and the numbers might also be the right height plus the 3″ stripes. You agree? Any idea of the capacity stencils

Yes, the Microscale set would be good for these cars, or any blue passenger cars with the buzzsaw, with one exception, and that is I think the numbers in that set are the 8″ numbers that were used on locomotives after the late 60s. Earlier Jenks blue engines, and all passenger cars as far as I know, would have had 5″ numbers. That’s the size that was in the old Champ set.

Looking at other photos, for instance the ones in the Kinkaid book, there do not seem to be any end numbers, which were 3″ as on the B ends of F units.

The photos I’ve found so far don’t show the capacity marking on these cars clearly, or at all. MP wasn’t in a real hurry to apply that stenciling. The capacity markings visible on that photo above are stenciled on a 250 car. The 1970 SoE shows light weight of the 135 series as 67000, and the 200 and 250 series as 77800.

The correct truck for this car, and the 200 express cars, is the Athearn BX truck with 5′-10″ wheelbase, modified by removing the outer portions of the sideframe that would have held outside brake shoes. There are two similar trucks available, you want the one that has the shock absorber at the truck centerline. The truck under the 250 cars is longer wheelbase, and has outside brake hangers on one end only.

Wonder if a modern MP caboose set has close numbers in height?

Here are two photos of MP 30304 I took on November 3, 1984 in the Wichita, KS yards.

I can get Hubert Mask to do a decal set for this model; am thinking it would include the as built for passenger service, the freight scheme with freight stenciling added and MoW lettering. Can you help? He’s got a buzz saw logo as he did an ART set. 3″ striping is simple all I need would be examples of the 5″ numbers

I should have good more-or-less broadside shots of the numbers. Let me look.

Charlie, next time you talk to Hubert, would you see if he can do N scale decals. I could use some for the car being discussed. Thanks, Chris Mueller

We’d have to have enough N scale sets to make it worthwhile I normally order 15 sets minimum. To complicate matter Hubert normally does two cars in each set. So can you and Chris get enough orders?

Idea — since the passenger car buzzsaw was 24″, maybe we could market those also as a 12″ buzzsaw in HO scale, maybe for MoW vehicles or office doors or something.

That’s not a bad idea, Ron. I could certainly use some buzzsaws for my HO scale vehicles.
